Energy Efficient Transformer at Wensleydale Creamery

North East based Slaters Electricals have completed a project with the award winning Wensleydale Creamery, as part of the £5 million expansion to their site in Hawes, North Yorkshire.
Wensleydale cheese has its heritage that dates back to the 12th century.  Today the Wensleydale Creamery still uses traditional cheese making techniques and recently achieved European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for its Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese – differentiating it from Wensleydale cheese made by other cheese-makers in other counties around the UK, who cannot call their cheese Yorkshire Wensleydale.
The expansion to the Hawes Creamery will include a brand new creamery building, allowing the production levels of the site to double. To accommodate the increased production capacity the site needed an upgrade from their low voltage power supply to a high voltage supply.
Initially Slaters liaised with Wensleydale Creamery to discuss their specific site requirements, and after some consideration it was decided that a Slaters Lo:Loss transformer would be the best solution for the supply upgrade. The Lo:Loss transformer is part of Slaters’ energy efficient distribution transformer range, which provide a reduction in energy and operational costs, and lower carbon footprint. As the site is part of a decentralised network, the creamery directly benefits from the energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions.
Slaters supplied the equipment and installed the transformer and associated cabling on site. Back-up generators were used over the changeover period so the site carried on at full production throughout.
Slaters project manager, Martin McGuirk said, “It has been great to work with Wensleydale Creamery on this project, and to be involved in the expansion of such a well-loved British brand. We worked closely with Wensleydale to find the best solution for them, and the Lo:Loss transformer offers exceptional energy and cost savings.”
David Hartley, Managing Director at the Wensleydale Creamery, said, “It is an exciting time as we continue to improve and expand our creamery site and we’ve been impressed with Slater’s solution and capabilities.  We have strong demand for our cheese in the UK as well as exporting around the world, so it’s vital to have a reliable production facility to meet demand for our famous handcrafted Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese.”
