Refurbished transformers and the Ecodesign Directive
The Ecodesign Directive, which came into force on the 1st July 2015, is an EU legislation which requires energy related products to meet strict energy efficient requirements. The directive includes regulation on small, medium and large transformers placed on the market for the first time after the enforcement date. The aim of the Ecodesign directive is to eliminate the worst performing products from the market and reduce energy and resource consumption. The main focus is on the ‘use’ phase of the products lifecycle – but what about at the end of the product’s service life?
The process of refurbishing transformers has been in practice for decades – in fact it has been at the core of Slaters Electricals since 1946. This process is cost effective and massively environmentally friendly as it re-uses resources which would have otherwise become industrial waste. It also hugely reduces the need to manufacture new which is a resource and energy intensive process.
We in Slaters Electricals have been consulting extensively with the Government agency responsible for enforcing the legislation in the UK, and we now have formal confirmation that refurbished transformers are out of the scope of the directive. Put in simple terms this means that we can continue to support the wider market with our range of premium refurbished equipment, in the secure knowledge that we have the full backing of the government agency responsible for enforcement of the Directive.
Slaters Electricals can offer you a comprehensive range of eco transformers, fully compliant with the Ecodesign Directive should your project require a new transformer. Or we can offer a comprehensive range of refurbished transformers should your project require an alternative option.
