Apprentices Driving Success at Slaters Electricals

At Slaters Electricals, we’re passionate about apprenticeships and the value they bring—to businesses, individuals and the industry as a whole.

We’ve been investing in apprentices since the early 1930’s because we believe in shaping the engineers of tomorrow. Apprenticeships offer young people a clear career path and a bright future, while ensuring our industry continues to thrive.

Two of our Directors, Martin McGuirk (joined in 1985) and Stephen Lancaster (joined in 1999), began their careers as apprentices—a testament to the opportunities and progression available at Slaters.

Every year, we welcome at least two new apprentices into roles right across the company ranging from administration to electrical installation. Each apprentice benefits from a comprehensive training plan, ongoing support, and the chance to excel as part of our team.

Discover below how four of our former apprentices have advanced their careers as electrical professionals, the qualifications they’ve achieved, and what they have to say about their journey at Slaters Electricals.

Slaters Electricals Hiring Apprentices Since 1930's

Alex Brown – Sales and Tendering Engineer

Starting as an Apprentice Electrical Fitter in September 2011, Alex has continually advanced his skills and qualifications—earning both his HNC and HND, and in 2020 achieving a First-Class Honours Degree in Engineering, fully funded by Slaters Electricals.

In January 2021, Alex joined our Technical Team, contributing to complex projects alongside our skilled engineers. Most recently, he has transitioned into our Sales Team as a Sales and Tendering Engineer, where he delivers tailored solutions and exceptional support to our customers.

Alex said: “The support I have received from Slaters since joining over a decade ago has been everything anyone could wish for from an employer. From the support received during my apprentice through to funding my degree, they have been excellent.”

“I would highly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone as my journey is testament to how they can help you get where you want to be in your career.”

Nicky Mowbray – Sales & Maintenance Engineer

Joining us in 2012 as an Apprentice Electrical Fitter, Nicky quickly built a strong foundation, earning key qualifications including, Level 4 HNC Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (QCF) and EAL Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

After completing his apprenticeship in 2016, Nicky continued to enhance his skills through advanced courses and refreshers, including Safe Operation of High Voltage Power Systems at the Faraday Centre.

Today, Nicky plays a vital role in our Sales and Maintenance team, helping our customers find the right equipment that meets their requirements, and regularly working on-site to maintain customers’ HV Switchgear and other critical equipment—delivering reliability and expertise every time.

Nicky said: “Slaters have played a key role in helping me develop as a professional and provided a lot of support and training to help me get where I am today.”

“If you are considering your career path and how to get to where you want to be, I would highly recommend considering an apprenticeship as its an excellent way to learn while you work and get the relevant experience and qualifications to progress your career.”

Kieran Bennett – Trainee Project Engineer

Joining us in August 2019 as an Apprentice Electrical Fitter, Kieran quickly demonstrated his commitment to learning and growth. During his apprenticeship, he achieved multiple qualifications, including a Level 4 HNC in Engineering and an EAL Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Installation & Commissioning.

Since completing his apprenticeship in 2023, Kieran has continued to excel—earning his Level 5 HND in Engineering with Distinction. His dedication and drive make him an invaluable part of our team and a great example of what apprenticeships can achieve. He is now undertaking the next stage in his career as a Trainee Project Engineer, working with our other, highly experienced Project team members.

Kieran said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Slaters so far. There is a great working environment both in the office, where I work now, and on the shop floor, where I worked in my previous role.”

“I chose an apprenticeship straight out of school as I was not sure what I wanted to do. I think it has served me extremely well as I was able to earn from 16 whilst also learning a trade and earning qualifications.”

“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone leaving school as opposed to going to university and potentially having a mountain of debt to contend with.”

Sam Thompson – Trainee Sales & Tendering Engineer

Joining us in 2020 as an Apprentice Electrical Fitter during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sam didn’t let a national lockdown stand in his way. We implemented all necessary measures to ensure he received the same high-quality training and support as those before him.

Since completing his apprenticeship, Sam has achieved impressive milestones, including his BTEC Level 5 HND in Engineering, and has undertaken numerous specialist training and safety courses—equipping him to excel in his role and build a successful career in the electrical industry.

Sam has recently become a Trainee Sales and Tendering Engineer, using the skills he has learnt over the years to help solve our customers’ problems. His responsibilities include managing the booking-in process for all second-hand stock, handling customer enquiries, reviewing specifications, and preparing detailed quotations and tender submissions.

Sam said: “I would strongly recommend an apprenticeship at Slaters to anyone considering this route. Slaters have been extremely supportive throughout my training, offering opportunities to gain recognised qualifications while learning directly from experienced engineers. It’s an excellent environment to develop both technical and professional skills, and a great way to earn while you learn.”
