SSI Hire Project – Press Release

A NORTH East electrical engineering firm has finished installing the vital power distribution plant needed to power the rebuild of the blast furnace at the Sahaviriya Steel Industries UK (SSI).
The project saw equipment from Slaters Electricals’ rental fleet on the Redcar plant for approximately six months, with the power distribution plant being used temporarily to distribute electricity from the local network to the furnace during the rebuild.
The news came as Thai firm SSI began to recruit staff, as plans to fire up the furnace were promised following its buy-out of the former Corus site on Teesside which was mothballed in early 2010.
Slaters Electricals, based in Blaydon, was awarded the national contract by Balfour Beatty Engineering Services Ltd. The energy specialists had the correct equipment in stock and available for hire and were one of only a few in the UK that could fulfil the brief.
The equipment included transformers and low voltage (LV) switchboards and also the expertise to install and commission the equipment, all of which will be used to help with the reconstruction of the blast furnace.
Slaters Electricals Ltd, experts in power distribution equipment and services, has passed through the Slater family tree, seeing it grow to become an internationally recognised brand.
Based in the North East of England, Slaters Electricals specialises in refurbished and new transformers, LV and MV switchgear and support services.
Slaters Electricals project manager Gary Atkinson said; “It has been a great experience working with Balfour Beatty Engineering Services Ltd and we are very proud of being able to help restore the steel industry in the UK. Working to a tight deadline and with a limited access to the site, we successfully completed the task at hand, providing the much needed power distribution equipment to the site. The hiring of our specialist equipment is fast becoming a real growth area for the company, and examples such as our work with SSI, should help us establish our reputation. Also as a local business it also gives us great pleasure in the knowledge that on the day the plant begins production over 1,000 jobs will have been created in the North East area.”
